Spotify Is Testing Token-Enabled Music Playlists

Spotify, the music streaming service, is testing a service known as token-enabled playlists,” which enables NFT (Non-Fungible Token) holders to connect their crypto wallets and listen to curated music.

The service is currently available to NFT holders within the Moonbirds, Fluf, Overlord, and Kingship communities. The curated playlists are set to be actively updated during the testing period, which runs for 3 months, and community members can only access them via a unique link.

Announcing the partnership, Overlord, a web3 gaming and media universe platform, posted the following on Twitter:

“Overlord x @Spotify

We’ve been selected as one of Spotify’s partners in a new pilot.

The exclusive pilot of their token-enabled playlists

Launching with a holder-curated playlist.”

Overload went further to reveal that the holders of its Creepz NFTs, its lizard-themed NFT project, can connect their Web3 wallet to Spotify to gain access to the project’s community-curated “Invasion” playlist.

Overlord further stated that the pilot is currently only available to Android users located in German, the US, the UK, New Zealand, and Australia.

In their reply to the tweet, Spotify appeared to confirm the details.

KINGSHIP, the Universal Music Group’s NFT band, also shared that it had created a token-based playlist featuring Queen, Snoop Dogg, Missy Eliott, and Led Zeppelin.

Apoorv Lathey, the lead developer for NFTX, an NFT liquidity protocol, shared a screenshot from the pilot on Twitter, detailing how to access the KINGSHIP’s curated playlist on Spotify.

Lathey also tweeted the following:

“We, KINGSHIP strive to ALWAYS be at the forefront of technology and music.

Now, we’re taking this commitment a step further by launching a brand new token-enabled playlist with @Spotify!

This is a specially curated playlist exclusively for KINGSHIP Key Card (NFT) holders.”

The screenshot shows that NFT holders can connect to their MetaMask, Rainbow, Trust Wallet, Zerion, or Ledger Live wallets.

A Spotify spokesperson said that it “routinely conducts several tests to improve our user experience.”

“Some of those end up paving the path for our broader user experience and others serve only as important learnings,” the spokesperson added.

Spotify did not give more details on whether there are plans to roll out the feature broadly in the future. In May 2022, Spotify selected a group of artists including The Wombats and Steve Aoki to promote NFTs on their profiles.
