What is Mutant Ape Yacht Club (MAYC)?

The Mutant Ape Yacht Club is an NFT offshoot collection of the Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) collection. The collection is made up of 20,000 unique Mutant Ape digital art images.

Half of the NFT collection was sold through public auction and the rest were created by BAYC NFT holders after exposing their Bored Apes to an airdropped “Mutant Serum.”

Each Mutant generated from a Bored Ape shares the traits of the original ape but as mutated variations.

The Mutant Ape Yacht Club was one of the first NFT collections to reward a community of NFT holders with a free and new NFT.

Yugas Labs attributed the success of the Bored Ape Yacht Club NFT to the community that surrounds the project.

To appreciate the community, Yugas Labs released the first phase of their project roadmap by launching MAYC, a new NFT collection inspired and created from the BAYC collection.

Although MAYC was launched to reward BAYC NFT holders, the project was also intended to welcome new members to the already established BAYC community and help it grow.

The first 10,000 Mutant Apes were sold within an hour after their launch and the team raised $96 million from the sales. The other 10,000 Mutant Apes were made from “Mutant Serums” airdropped to the Bored Ape Yacht Club NFT holders.

The Serums are normally combined with Bored Ape NFTs and they have three different levels of scarcity namely M1, M2, and M3 (rarest).

The project has 7,500 M1 serums, 2,492 M2 serums, and 8 M3 serums. After the sale of the 10,000 MAYC NFTs, BAYC NFT holders were allowed to mint the Mutant Apes for free, including the gas fees, by exposing the Bored Apes to a vial of Serum using smart contracts.

Holders can expose any Bored Ape to the M1, M2, or M3 Serum vial only once. The resulting Mutant Ape will have all the characteristics of the Bored Ape but with mutated variations.

Exposing the Bored Apes to Serum mutates them visually in several ways, including protruding neck growths, bulging eyes, deformed teeth, and dripping skin. Other attributes include a creature worn as a hat and torn shirt.

The Mutant Ape Yacht Club NFT has a very clear roadmap and joining it means joining a large community of active members.
