Ripple updated its XRPL AI Starter Kit to version 1.1 on September 17, adding support for the Machine Payments Protocol (MPP) co-authored by Stripe and Tempo, alongside the x402 web payment standard and the Open Wallet Standard.
The update was announced in a RippleX developer post titled “Open Standards, Not an Island,” and lets autonomous AI agents pay for online services with XRP and ledger-issued tokens such as RLUSD. RippleX head of product Jazzi Cooper said in a post on X that the expansion covers “the open standards developers are converging on.”
“Agentic payments will be multi-platform and multi-rail,” Cooper wrote. “Our job is to make XRP and RLUSD first-class options wherever developers are building.”
The framing is a deliberate hedge. Ripple added x402 support to the kit in June and has now folded in MPP, so it backs both of the leading AI payment standards instead of betting on one winner. Stripe introduced the Machine Payments Protocol with Tempo in March, and Coinbase and Cloudflare are also behind x402, putting XRP in the same infrastructure race as those firms.
One constraint is easy to miss. In the beta software, individual payments already support RLUSD, but ongoing payment sessions currently require XRP. Extending sessions to stablecoins depends on a proposed XRPL ledger upgrade with no announced date.
The Open Wallet Standard integration also matters for safety: agents can request transactions without ever touching private keys, with spending limits and approved destinations enforced. XRPL settlement is reported to run 3 to 5 seconds, suited to the small repeated payments agentic commerce produces.
Ripple’s announcement names no commercial customers for the MPP integration and provides no payment volume, and the software remains in beta.
