Ethereum stakers keep a 2.6% yield as EIP-8363 leaves Hegota

Ethereum’s staking reward burn proposal EIP-8363 has been pulled from the Hegota upgrade, and with it went the change that would have cut validator yield from about 2.6% a year to about 1.2% at current staking levels.

The proposal, called the Tapered Issuance Burn, would have burned a rising share of validator rewards as more ETH gets staked. The specification set the burn at 100% of rewards once roughly 60.25 million ETH is staked, about half of the supply, phasing in over about 18 months. Mid-August, around 34% of ETH supply was staked. At that level the annual consensus yield would have dropped from about 2.6% to 1.2%, a cut of more than half for every staker and liquid staking protocol.

Co-author Jérôme de Tychey, president of Ethereum France, announced the withdrawal in a post on X on Oct. 1. He said industry participants and core protocol and client contributors argued during the Hegota Consideration for Inclusion process that a fork scoping exercise was not the right venue to settle an issuance policy change. The proposal had drawn more than 200 comments on the Ethereum-Magicians forum within weeks, one of the most commented-on EIPs there.

“The topic is too important and raised too many concerns that it deserves its own process. We commit to giving issuance its own process and we thank the entities such as @LidoFinance who offered to help steer such an initiative,” de Tychey wrote.

The authors are not dropping the idea. De Tychey said they stand by the EIP’s motivation, that a very high staking ratio threatens Ethereum’s security, neutrality and resistance to capture, and ETH’s role as money. A separate issuance process is planned, starting with a forum at Devcon in November, followed by workshops in February and March and a forum at EthCC in April 2027 aiming to bring a new issuance proposal to consideration.
