Optimism Governance Vote Redirects 546.9 Million OP From User Airdrops to Ecosystem Fund

Optimism governance has approved a proposal that pulls 546.9 million OP tokens out of future user airdrops and routes them into a Strategic Ecosystem Fund controlled by the Foundation. The fund is aimed at partnerships and institutional growth.

At the current OP price of roughly $0.09, the reallocation is worth about $50 million. That is nearly a quarter of the token’s approximately $211 million market capitalization, per CoinGecko data cited by Cointelegraph. Tokens that had been earmarked for future airdrop recipients will instead go toward deals with chains, protocols, and institutions.

For retail users, the upshot is straightforward. Anyone who might have qualified for future distributions will not receive them. The funds now sit with the Foundation for partnership deals and liquidity incentives.

Optimism has no additional airdrops planned after distributing 269.1 million OP across five rounds. Airdrops, the project argued, were better suited to an earlier phase focused on broad user acquisition than to its current institutional push. The Strategic Ecosystem Fund will back partnerships with chains, protocols, and institutions, along with incentives to increase activity and liquidity on OP Mainnet and grow OP Enterprise.

Not everyone was on board. Some delegates pushed back, arguing the tokens had been promised to users and questioning how the Foundation would measure returns from the fund. Supporters countered that the allocation would be better used to compete for enterprise deals and drive growth.

The vote’s exact tally and margin were not disclosed in the Cointelegraph report. No timeline for fund deployment was stated.

OP traded around $0.09 on Thursday, up roughly 11% over the past 24 hours as the broader crypto market rallied. The token remains more than 93% below its all-time high. Circulating supply stands at approximately 2.29 billion tokens.

Optimism is the Ethereum (ETH) scaling project behind OP Mainnet and the OP Stack, the blockchain framework used by networks including Base, Unichain, Kraken’s Ink, and Sony’s Soneium. More than 30 OP Stack chains currently contribute revenue to Optimism, according to the project.

The shift arrives as Optimism pushes deeper into institutional partnerships. In July, the project signed a memorandum of understanding with Viva Republica, operator of South Korea-based mobile money app Toss, for a three-month proof-of-concept testing a Korean won-based stablecoin infrastructure for institutional payments.

Open questions remain. How the Foundation will report on the fund’s deployments and whether governance will retain oversight over individual partnership allocations were not addressed in the proposal as reported.
