World splits in two: World Money separates finance from identity

World has split its services in two, moving payments and trading into a new self-custodial app called World Money while identity verification stays in a dedicated World ID App.

The company said in its announcement that World Money rolled out Thursday, September 17, in more than 150 countries, with features varying by location. Existing World App and World ID App users can carry their verification and credentials into World Money without creating a new account, so nobody has to re-verify to use the new wallet.

The split ends three years of everything living in one app. World App launched in May 2023, combining World ID with a crypto wallet, stablecoin transfers and token trading. In October 2024 the company rebuilt it as World App 3.0, a self-described “super app for humans” that added third-party Mini Apps and a Vault for earning on assets. From there the financial side kept growing on its own: crypto payments and chat arrived in March 2025, Circle brought native USDC to World that summer, and in November 2025 World piloted virtual bank accounts in the US that convert paychecks and deposits into USDC, expanding to more countries a month later.

World Money now holds that financial stack. It supports balances in eight currencies and lets users send digital assets, including stablecoins, to a recipient’s World username. A partnership with Stripe lets US users fund accounts and buy stablecoins with Apple Pay, with funds typically arriving within minutes, and eligible users can receive deposits and paychecks directly through virtual accounts powered by Bridge. Rewards programs run on Morpho, and World ID verification still sits underneath: Orb-verified users get boosted rewards on eligible Earn programs.

“Money moves differently when accounts belong to people. Whether you’re sending funds across the street or across continents, World ID infuses trust into transactions,” World said in the announcement, adding that as AI makes fake accounts cheaper and more convincing, “a network of humans becomes the thing money rails can’t fake.”

Tools for Humanity, the company co-founded by Sam Altman and Alex Blania that operates World, runs the new app. Some financial, yield and card-related features reportedly remain restricted in parts of the United States and elsewhere depending on local rules, and the Stripe funding flow is US-only for now.
