Metaplanet Denies Selling $320M in Bitcoin After BTC Transfer Sparks Rumors

Metaplanet has not sold any bitcoin. That was the message from CEO Simon Gerovich after blockchain trackers flagged a 5,014 BTC transfer worth roughly $320 million and speculation spread that the Tokyo-listed company was liquidating part of its treasury.

On-chain monitoring accounts spotted the movement on Wednesday. The transfer sent 5,014 BTC, about $322 million at recent prices according to Cointelegraph, between custodial addresses. Total fees: roughly $8. “We transferred 5,014 BTC between Metaplanet custodial addresses over the past 24 hours,” Gerovich wrote on X. “This was a routine custody operation. No bitcoin was sold, and our holdings remain 43,000 BTC.”

Eight dollars to move a third of a billion dollars. It is the kind of detail that cuts both ways. The figure fits a cold-storage reshuffle, but it also fed the rumor mill. Moving a position that large for the price of a sandwich looks alarming until someone explains it.

Gerovich moved fast to shut the sale talk down. CoinDesk cited his post describing the transfer as “a routine custody transfer” rather than a liquidation. Cointelegraph corroborated both the on-chain movement and the denial.

The episode lands at an awkward moment for bitcoin-treasury firms. Strategy (MSTR) and Metaplanet are both sitting on unrealized bitcoin losses, CoinDesk noted in a separate analysis, and investors are watching for any sign a major corporate holder is trimming.

Strategy has already been doing exactly that. The company sold portions of its bitcoin holdings to fund dividends on its preferred stock STRC, repurchase STRC shares, and replenish its U.S. dollar reserve, CoinDesk reported. That makes any large movement from a rival treasury firm newsworthy by default.

Bitcoin traded near $63,515 at press time, per CoinDesk’s market data. Down on the day amid broader selling pressure across digital assets.

Metaplanet’s 43,000 BTC stash, if Gerovich’s figure holds, keeps it among the largest publicly listed bitcoin holders. The question now is whether the market takes the custody-shuffle explanation at face value the next time a wallet that size moves.

Holders, as ever, are divided.
