How Ethereum plans to hit 8-second finality by 2030

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin laid out a plan on Sunday that would cut transaction finality from about 200 seconds on 2015 Ethereum to 8 to 32 seconds by 2030.

The targets appear in an essay titled “The cryptographic world computer” that Buterin published on his blog on Sept 27. Blocks arrive in slots of 4 to 8 seconds by 2030 under the plan, and a node confirms a block by checking a cryptographic proof and sampling data through PeerDAS instead of re-executing and downloading every block. PeerDAS shipped in the Fusaka upgrade in December 2025 for blob data, and Buterin wrote that it will later cover full block contents.

Buterin set the goal against a caution about what Ethereum itself can deliver. “Ethereum itself will never have latency that competes with servers, but infrastructure built around it could,” he wrote. Applications would run much of their computation offchain while Ethereum verifies the results and settles them, which is what he says makes the tight finality window realistic without a faster chain.

Signatures are part of the speedup too. Under draft EIP-8288, which Buterin co-authored with Thomas Coratger in June, signatures get aggregated offchain with a single one attached onchain per block, and only entry nodes see individual signatures and proofs.

He shared the essay on X with a summary of what is coming. “It’s really not just a blockchain anymore. It’s a hybrid architecture that combines together blockchains and modern cryptography, to enable much more powerful properties,” Buterin wrote in the post.

The 2030 numbers sit at the end of a longer queue of upgrades. Glamsterdam’s Sepolia testnet fork is scheduled for Oct 6, with the mainnet launch listed for Q4 2026 without a confirmed date. The Hegota fork follows in 2027, and Buterin expects it to be Ethereum’s last “normal” fork, the last one built with technology a 2015-era developer would recognize. After that, recursive STARKs, formal verification and quantum-safe security take over.

ETH traded near $2,700 on Sept 27, roughly flat over 24 hours.
